Associate Professor Dr. Musa Kayondo, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda, is a leading figure in the fight against obstetric fistula. Trained by American urogynecologist Dr. Tom Margolis, Dr. Kayondo was the first graduate of the MUST/MFH collaborative Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Program. He pioneered the first urogynecology and fistula surgery training fellowship in East, Central, and Southern Africa at Mbarara University Teaching Hospital. This program aims to increase the number of skilled surgeons capable of managing fistula and other childbirth-related injuries.
As Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Professor Kayondo is guiding The Musa Project from the inside out—identifying what’s most needed in his country to expand access, improve surgical training, and end obstetric fistula for good.
Professor Musa Kayondo is building a team rooted in trust, skill, and shared purpose — people who carry his vision forward and stand with him in service to Uganda’s women.
Through his tireless work and deep commitment, Professor Kayondo models the kind of leadership that changes lives, builds trust, and inspires others to serve with purpose.
Professor Kayondo is bringing care closer to the women who need it most. Through outreach, training, and mentorship, he’s breaking down barriers — making sure no woman is too far, too poor, or too forgotten to be seen and healed.
In March 2025, Musa's Fellowship Program received recognition as the first and only advanced training program of its kind in East, Central, and Southern Africa.
Led by Associate Professor Dr. Musa Kayondo at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, this two-year fellowship equips Ugandan OB/GYNs with life-saving surgical skills to treat devastating childbirth injuries like obstetric fistula, pelvic organ prolapse, and incontinence.
With fewer than five trained urogynecologists in all of Uganda — serving over 24 million women — this fellowship directly answers the urgent need for specialized, in-country care.
Professor Musa Kayondo’s devotion to Uganda’s women is reshaping futures — not just through surgery, but by building the next generation of care.
